520 |b As part of the energy transition and refinery rationalization taking place around the world, many refiners are looking for ways to reduce its carbon emissions by producing renewable fuels, while helping to control investment and operating costs. Recently, coprocessing of biomass-based oil in the existing refineries has received attention due to its potential to provide low carbon renewable by using existing refining, transport and storage infrastructure. Co-processed fuels may also increase the supply of “drop-in” biofuels to the market fuels at economically competitive prices as they contain both fossil and biofuel components, so they can be blended with petroleum fuels and are not subject to the same biofuel blend limits as more conventional biofuels. The objective of this study is to highlight the benefits of the Integration of bioand petroleum refineries for producing of renewable fuels, enabling oil refineries to meet environmental regulations, and improving the refinery profits without high capital investment costs. This study includes four chapters. The first chapter includes a brief introduction about the principles of biorefineries and the characterization of different types of renewable fuels. The second chapter explains options for integrating the biorefineries and oil refineries and the main pathways of co-processing biocrude oils in oil refineries’ units, such as Atmospheric distillation, Fluidized Catalytic cracking FCC, Hydrotreating and Hydrocracking units. The third chapter reviews the environmental impact of co-processing of biomassbased oil in the existing refineries, while the fourth chapter addresses the challenges and opportunities of coprocessing biomass-based oil in oil refineries. The study ended up with some conclusions and recommendations. The recommendations emphasized the need for more research and development to be conducted on the lab-scale and pilot-scale of co-processing bio-oil and petroleum feeds in the oil refineries.
