تعددت الآراء في تحديد نشأت التشيع، والأرجح أنه عندما مات عثمان رضي الله عنه انقسم المسلمون إلى فريقين، فريق سمي بشيعة علي، وكان الفريق الأكبر، والفريق الثاني سمي بشيعة معاوية، وبمرور الوقت ازداد حماس المؤمنين بعلي وأبنائه وأحفاده كأئمة على المسلمين، ومن حقه الولاية والخلافة، فالشيعة يرون أن التشيع عقيدة دينية خالصة، وهناك مسلمون يرون أنه فكر سياسي، وفريق يرى أن التشيع وجدان عاطفي خالص، ومن ثم فالشيعة لم يكونوا في الأول فرقة دينية، بل كانت فكرة سياسية، وهي أن علياً أحق بالخلافة من معاوية، فكان تحمسهم لعلي من وجهة نظرهم؛ لأنه ذو علم وحكمة، ولأنه ابن عم النبي. تعتبر فرقة الشيعة من أكبر الفرق الإسلامية وأكثرها تأثيرًا واستمرارًا إلى اليوم، ولم تختلف الشيعة عن باقي الفرق إلا في التأويل والأحكام، واختلفت أيضًا مع باقي الفرق في شروط الإمامة وطريقة تطبيقها ومن أحق بها اجتمعت فرق الشيعة على عدة أصول ومبادئ وكان بعضها إيجابيًا، وبعضها سلبيًا، فكان الإجماع على هذه المبادئ هو شرط لصحة الإيمان عندهم والانتساب إليهم، وأثرت المعتزلة على الشيعة، كما أخذوا من الشيعة الأصول الخمسة ماعدا أصل واحد وهو الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر، وضعوا مكانه أصل الإمامة، وتأثروا أيضًا بآراء كبار الصوفية، وخاصة الفلاسفة منهم؛ لذا كان التصوف والاعتزال هما السمات الغالبة على مبادئ الشيعة.
