|a يعد كتاب معجم البلدان من أهم المصنفات والمصادر التي اعتمد عليها الكثير من الباحثون بكل ما يشمل علم الجغرافية لمعرفة أسماء البلدان والأماكن والاطلاع عليها بشكل أدق، ولاسيما أصبح هذا المعجم مصدرا مهما لأنواع العلوم الأخرى، فقد برزت الأوضاع السياسية في المغرب الإسلامي لقادة الفتح إذ واجهت الدولة العربية الإسلامية معوقات لفتح بلاد المغرب الإسلامي، والتي أوضحت عدة أمور لهذه المرحلة ومنها التغير الجذري للمغرب من تحويل أهل تلك البلاد إلى مجتمع إسلامي محرر من العبودية التي كانت تسيطر عليها الروم والفرنجة، وإنشاء قوة عسكرية تكون مركزا دفاعيا وحصينا لهم من الأعداء، فكانت هذه من أولى خطوات المسلمين لفتح بلاد المغرب.
