|b This paper attempts to reveal the development that took place in the theory of representation through studying two works of art from two different ages. Las Meninas, a painting that goes back to the seventeenth century, is taken as an exposition of the Classical theory of representation which regards ideas as mental representations of objects, and art as a physical representation of ideas. The painting employs the mirror, the window and the canvas to reveal the harmony between "inner" and "outer;" between art and life. "The Lady of Shalott," on the other hand, uses the same devices to dramatize the rupture that took place, not only between art and life, ideal and real, but also inside the human psyche. During the seventeenth century, poetry and painting were considered as sister-arts. By the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth, confidence in the picturing power of language diminished, carrying along with it an eclipse in the certainty about a "reality" that can be depicted.
