المستخلص: كتاب «المحتسب» هو من مؤلفات ابن جني المتأخرة، كتبه في أواخر سنينه عندما تصدر للتدريس في بغداد، والكتاب يختص بجمع ودراسة وتوجيه القراءات القرآنية الشادة، وهو أول مصنف يعني بالاحتجاج لتلكم القراءات. - تأثر ابن جني في تأليف هذا الكتاب بمنهج أستاذه الفارسي في «الحجة في القراءات السبعة»؛ حيث اتبع أسلوبه في عرض القراءة، ثم نسبتها إلى من قرأ بها، وبيان العلماء السابقين فيها، ويبدأ بعدها بالاحتجاج للقراءة وتوجيهها حسبما يقتضيه السياق. على الرغم من أن الكتاب يعالج قضية القراءات في جميع أجزائه، إلا أن ابن جني يعرج فيه على مسائل لغوية عديدة، تتصل في أغلبها باحتجاجه للقراءات الشاذة وتبيين أوجه القوة فيها. - المذهب النحوي عند ابن جني مختلف عليه، حيث رأت طائفة أنه ينتمي إلى المدرسة البصرية التي أسس قواعدها الخليل بن أحمد وتلميذه سيبويه، بينما ذهبت طائفة أخرى إلى أنه من نحاة المدرسة البغدادية التي مزجت بين آراء البصريين والكوفيين وتهدف للموازنة بينهما. هناك إجماع بين أغلبية الدارسين على توجه معين لدى ابن جني، فهم مع اختلافهم يتفقون على أنه كان متقاربا مع البصريين، ولتتلمذه لدى الفارسي تأثير على هذا التوجه ولا يزعم أحد أنه كان كوفيا، ومع ميوله البصرية لم يكن متزمتا في اتباعه لمنهج نحاة البصرة، فلا يتردد في الخروج عنه، ثم يختلف الباحثون حول مدى التصاقه بالبصريين، وهل كانت ميوله قوية بما فيه الكافية لضمه إليهم، أم أنه كان متحررا من الانتماء المذهبي وصادف أنه استحسن آراء نحاة البصرة.

The book ''Al-Muhtaseb'' is one of Ibn Jinni’s late writings. He wrote it in his late years when it was published for teaching in Baghdad. The book is concerned with collecting, studying and guiding strong Quranic readings. - In writing this book, Ibn Jinni was influenced by the approach of his teacher, Al-Farsi, in ''The Proof of the Seven Readings. ''Where he followed his method of presenting the reading, then attributing it to those who read it, and explaining the previous scholars in it, and then begins to invoke the reading and direct it as required by the context. Although the book deals with the issue of readings in all its parts, Ibn Jinni touches on several linguistic issues in it, most of which are related to his protest against abnormal readings and his explanation of their strengths. - The grammatical doctrine of Ibn Jinni is disputed, as one group saw that he belongs to the Basran school whose grammar was founded by Khalil Bin Ahmad and his student Sibawayh, while another group believed that he was from the Baghdadi school of grammar that mixed the opinions of the Basrans and the Kufans and aimed to balance them. - There is unanimity among the majority of scholars on a certain orientation of Ibn Jinni, so they agree with their differences that he was close to the Basrans, and his student at Al-Farsi had an influence on this orientation, and no one claims that he was a Kufian, and despite his visual tendencies he was not puritanical in his following the approach of the grammarians of Basra. He did not hesitate to deviate from it, then the researchers disagreed about the extent of his adherence to the Basrans, and whether his tendencies were strong enough to include him with them, or was he free from sectarian affiliation and happened to approve of the opinions of the Basra grammarians.
