Spices are a symbol of social status in Europe and in all countries of the Mediterranean basin in the ancient and the middle Ages times, where spices had enormous commercial value, not only as food detriments, but as medicines, preservatives and perfumes. It was used to control the spread of the plague, and as a pesticide to eliminate germs. It was also used in religious and ceremonial rituals as well. It is an ideal light commodity, but its prices are equivalent to the prices of precious stones. In addition, it was associated with trips and adventures, explorations, religious missions and conquest. Venice eliminated its competitors Genoa, Pisa, and Amalfi and monopolized this trade, and was able to control the spice market on the level of the European continent.
