|b The aim of this article is to discuss and analyze the impact of the Dead family history in the construction and the preservation of the memory of the black race as a whole. The power of memory in resuscitating the vitality of a collective past in the life of the African American community whose cultural heritage is plagued by the burden of racism, classism and sexism is investigated in this article. In fact, the author shows that in spite of the white man’s attempt to ‘wipe it out’, African American culture and spiritual heritage survived in the minds and memories of its people. The workings of this cultural legacy came to characterize many aspects of the daily life of the African American communities whose collective effort at solidarity and unity paid off despite the challenge of the racist and classist forces that threatened them from the inside and the outside. Toni Morrison has always maintained her interest in the solidification of the relationship between the individuals and the community to ensure the preservation and the continuation of the race and the black folklore as this study demonstrates through the incorporation of myth, past, culture and black historical heritage. In fact, it is only when Milkman understands his family history and reconciles with his Southern roots that he is enabled to reach self-knowledge and collective acceptance of his newly formed race conscious identity.
