| 520 | |b This study aims to examine semantic shift in classical Arabic texts and the challenges it poses for translators; it also tests the ability of machine translation to detect and render semantic shift from Arabic to English. The study employs Yaakobi’s book “Al-Buldan” as source text to spot semantic shift in professions and names of geographical places in the part related to Mid-Maghreb or present day Algeria. Not only does semantic shift pose challenges for machine translation and translators in general, but it might also undermine research and reduce opportunities of establishing facts for historians and linguists, hence the need to establish laboratories where linguists, translators, historians, stakeholders and researchers collaborate to study and translate ancient Arabic texts. | ||
