|b Arabic is the language of the Qur’an and the language of Islam. It is, therefore, one of the world’s most widely spoken languages across the Middle East and North Africa. Arabic is the official language of twenty-five sovereign states. It is widely used as a lingua franca for a variety of communicative interactions between various communities in Asia and Africa. Given the long historical relations and interactions between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and Northern Nigeria and Nigeria generally, it could be argued that there has been a deliberate effort to promote the development of Arabic language in the region. In this respect, this study examines the role of KSA in the promotion of Arabic language in Northern Nigeria. Through various development intervention programmes and interagency collaborations, including building of Islamic learning centres and Masjid, Da’awah programmes, provisions of educational scholarships, Daurah schools, the KSA has greatly influenced the promotion of Arabic language in Northern Nigeria and Nigeria generally. However, these efforts are being limited by some challenges, such as people socio-cultural attitudes to Arabic, their preference to English over Arabic language, opposition to non- Muslims studying Arabic, institutional bias by Governments, etc. Nevertheless, despite these challenge, tremendous potentials exist not only to mitigate these challenges but to also continue to drive benefits from exploiting Nigeria-KSA relations to strengthen the development of Arabic language in Northern Nigeria.
