|a كان العمل في مصر القديمة من حيث شق القنوات وإقامة السدود وتشييد المعابد وبناء الأهرامات وغيرها من الأعمال الحيوية يتطلب كمية هائلة من العمل البشري يقدر بالآلاف من الأيدي العاملة. وكان الكثير من هذه القوة الدائمة من أسرى الحرب والمساجين والمحكوم عليهم، يضاف إليهم عدد كبير من العمال الذين بمستوى العبيد تقريباً. وكان هؤلاء العبيد عبارة عن طبقات من الشعب تمتلكها طبقات أخرى يحق لها أن تبيعها وتورثها أولادها أو تؤجرها أو تعتقها بعقد رسمي، ولكننا نلاحظ أن لهؤلاء العبيد أملاكهم التي يمكنهم التصرف فيها كيفما أرادوا، ولهم خدمهم، وتزوجوا بسيدات من الأحرار. وهنا الأمر يبدو متناقضاً لنا في حين أنه ليس كذلك عند المصري القديم الذي لم يتقيد بنظريات ثابتة في مجال القانون. والأمر يحتاج لمزيد من الدراسة حول هذا الموضوع، لذلك كان التقدم بهذا العنوان ضمن أعمال هذا المؤتمر.
