International intervention is still a complicated aspect of US foreign policy. However, the US military intervention in Libya in 2011 was a watershed moment in international relations because it was the first full-fledged test of the legal norm of Responsibility to Protect. As a result, this intervention sparked debate about the goals, strategies, and effects of such actions. In order to evaluate the intervention, this essay adopts a Liberal theory of international relations in an attempt to understand the multifaceted issues of this intervention. In so doing, this article then offers a critique of the idea of liberal interventionism and its application in this particular event. |
