المستخلص: Nella Larsen‖s Passing (1929) is an American novel that was written and published during the times of the Harlem Renaissance, and thus is widely recognized as a Harlem classic. A contemporary of the Jim Crow era, the writer has also in her novel reflected the sufferings of, racism and segregation against the black people in America. The novel is also perceived to have depicted the 1920s, which were also times of tremendous accumulating racial tensions as a result of a long history of slavery and subsequent times of discrimination, subjugation and seclusion exercised by the whites against the blacks. Besides, due to some European ancestry, some people of color had a quite fair skin and as such passed for white, and thus the practice of passing has been deemed the central theme of the novel. The novel is also seen to have investigated the problem of race, of racial identities and the intricacies of dual/multicultural identities as a whole. In addition to all that, the current research paper argues that Larsen‖s novel through investigating race and racial identities has advanced forward a cultural identity model as an alternative to and solution of racial identities and their complexities. The novel apparently attempts to navigate such diverse racial and cultural context of identity so that it might draw its readers‖ attention to the possibility of a better and more solid choice of identity such as an all-inclusive cultural one. Instead of a rather racial or passing identity only, the novel apparently encourages the adoption of a cultural identity model. The research paper at hand is thus to explore and navigate cultural identities in Nella Larsen‖s Passing through analyzing the experiences of black, mixed race people and people of color with relation to their racial identity.
