المستخلص: Participatory democracy is a complementary approach to representative democracy, it does not negate it but rather seeks to overcome its shortcomings. The role of the citizen no longer ends with casting votes in the ballot boxes but has become an essential partner in managing local affairs. This allows for a continuous and institutionalized dialogue between local authorities and citizens. The application of Participatory democracy in Algeria takes various forms and mechanisms, including informing citizens about their local affairs, consulting them on local development priorities, participatory budgeting, presenting the annual activity report of municipalities to citizens, ongoing management, encouraging citizens' local initiatives, and utilizing local experts and competencies. However, for these mechanisms to succeed in institutionalizing participatory democracy in Algeria there must be genuine political will from the heads of municipal councils and an organized and effective civil society whose main goal is to contribute significantly to joint local management and prioritize the public interest over private interests.
