|a إن للنفط أهمية استراتيجية واقتصادية لا يمكن إهمالها وتجاهلها فهي المحرك لديمومة الحياة في كل دول العالم وهو المصدر الأساسي للعملة الصعبة في دول العالم الثالث خاصة المصدرة له، والسودان من ابرز الدول التي كانت تعاني من وضع اقتصادي متردي وتطمح لان تكون أراضيها محط انظر الشركات النفطية الكبرى لبحث والتنقيب عن النفط خاصة بعد اكتشاف النفط في الخليج العربي وفي بعض الدول الأفريقية، فكانت دائما ما تطالب وتدعو الشركات النفطية للعمل والتنقيب في أراضيها، ورغم حدوث بعض المسوحات الجيولوجية وتشين التنقيب عن النفط في اب ١٩٥٩ ألا أنه لم يتم الإعلان عن اكتشاف النفط في حوض هجليج ألا عام ۱۹۸۱ من قبل شركة شيفرون الأمريكية معلنة أنها ستبدأ بإنتاج وتصدير النفط في عام ١٩٨٦، ألا أن حدوث الحرب الأهلية بين الشمال والجنوب حال دون ذلك.
|b Oil has strategic and economic importance that cannot be neglected or ignored. It is the engine for sustaining life in all countries of the world and is the main source of hard currency in third-world countries, especially those that export it. Sudan is one of the most prominent countries suffering from a deteriorating economic situation and aspires to have its lands be the focus of major oil companies. To search and explore for oil, especially after discovering oil in the Arabian Gulf and some African countries. Oil companies were always demanding and invited to work and explore their lands. Although some geological surveys took place and oil exploration began in August 1959, no announcement was made of the discovery of oil in the Basin. Heglig was established only in 1981 by the American company Chevron, announcing that it would begin producing and exporting oil in 1986. Still, the civil war between the North and the South prevented this.
