Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and periodontal disease are both chronic conditions with systemic implications, yet their potential interplay remains underexplored. This comprehensive review aims to elucidate the association between CKD and periodontal health status. Several mechanisms underlie the association between CKD and periodontal health. Shared risk factors such as diabetes, hypertension, and inflammation contribute to the development and progression of both conditions. Additionally, CKD-related immune dysfunction and impaired wound healing may exacerbate periodontal inflammation and tissue destruction, while periodontal pathogens and their byproducts may exacerbate systemic inflammation and renal injury in CKD patients. Understanding the complex interplay between CKD and periodontal health status is crucial for comprehensive patient management. Multidisciplinary approaches integrating nephrology and periodontology are warranted to optimize the oral and systemic health outcomes of CKD patients. Future research should focus on elucidating the mechanistic pathways linking CKD and periodontal disease and evaluating the efficacy of periodontal interventions in improving renal outcomes in CKD populations.
