|a يتناول البحث الحديث عن شجرة السرو واستخداماتها في ضوء المصادر الكلاسيكية والوثائقية، وذلك من خلال الحديث عن موطن شجرة السرو، والمناخ الملائم لنموها، أيضا وصف لشجرة السرو وثمارها، هذا فضلا عن أنواعها المختلفة البرية والمزروعة، ثم خصائص خشب السرو مثل: الجودة والصلابة والرائحة العطرة، وبالإضافة إلى مظهرها اللامع والبراق، ومقاومتها لعوامل التلف التي تصيب غيرها من الأخشاب، ثم ننتقل بالحديث عن ارتباط شجر السرو بالموتى عند اليونانيين والرومان على حد سواء، ومحاولة شرح دلالات هذا الارتباط وفقا لعادات اليونانيين والرومان في الجنائز، ثم نتناول استخدامات أخشاب السرو المتعددة طبقا لما جاء في المصادر الكلاسيكية وتدعيمها بما ورد من إشارات حول هذه الاستخدامات في المصادر الوثائقية ومنها: صناعة توابيت الموتى، وبناء السفن والقوارب النهرية، وبناء المعابد، وصناعة التماثيل، وعمارة القصور، وبناء المنازل، واستخدامها في صناعة صناديق لحفظ الكتب، ثم الاستخدامات الطبية المتنوعة طبقا لما ورد بالمصادر مثل: تطهير البشرة، والمراهم، وعلاج الجروح، وعلاج التهاب العين.
|b This study tackles the Cupressus tree and its uses in light of classical and documentary sources. It investigates the habitat and suitable climate for its growth, as well as a description of the tree and its fruits. It also explores the different types of wild and cultivated Cupressus trees, and the characteristics of Cupressus wood in terms of quality, hardness, fragrant smell, shiny appearance, and resistance to damage that affects other types of trees. The study then touches upon the association of Cupressus trees with the dead among the Greeks and Romans and attempts to explain the significance of this association according to the burial customs of these cultures. Also explored are the multiple uses of Cupressus wood as mentioned in classical sources, supported by evidence from documentary sources, including making coffins; building ships and riverboats; constructing temples, palaces and houses; making statues; and making book boxes. Finally, the study discusses various medical uses of Cupressus wood as per classical sources, such as skin cleansing, ointments, wound treatment, and treatment of eye inflammation.
