|a آتوم هو واحد من أهم المعبودات المصرية التي كان لها دورا هاما، فقد اختص بالإشراف على عقاب الموتى المذنبين، مثله مثل أوزير، حور، وسخمت وغيرهم من المعبودات، فيظهر هذا الدور بوضوح في كتاب البوابات وخاصة في الساعة الأولى والثانية والساعة السادسة، حيث يظهر بهيئة رجل يرتدي نقبة قصيرة وغطاء الرأس ومتكئ على عصا، ويظهر المذنبين مصورين أمامه مقيدين الأذرع وهو يشرف ويتابع على عملية معاقبة أعداء رع، ويتولى مراقبة المحكوم عليهم، وربما أن هذ الدور الإشرافي الذي لعبه يتماشى مع طبيعة هذا المعبود، فهو من أعضاء المحكمة التي فصلت بين حور وست، فكان دائما واقف على الحياد ليكون هو ممثل للعدالة، كما حمل العديد من الألقاب التي تتفق مع هذا الدور الإشرافي مثل المشرف على العالم الآخر، والمشرف على الغرب، سيد الغرب، وغيرها من الألقاب: مما يؤكد على الدور الذي لعبه كمشرف على عقاب الموتى.

Perhaps this supervisory role it played is in line with the nature of this god, as it is one of the members of the judgement that judged Horas and Sat and it was always neutral to be a representative of justice. It also had many titles that are suitable for this supervisory role, such as the supervisor of the Otherworld, the supervisor of the west, the master of the west, and other titles that confirmed the role it played in the other world as supervisor of punishing deads.
