This study aims to show the stakes of a type of street performance through the carnival festival in Tunis. It particularly describes the course of the carnival, the circuits traveled through the city of Tunis from 1899 to 1914. Based mainly on photos published by the French magazine La Tunisie illustrée, the study shows the different types of floats and cars making up the caravan. A comparison with the so-called “Arab” festival confined to scenes of horse races, shows that this is a second-class event. What meaning should be given to the occupation of space by the French festival? The choice of themes illustrating the carnival is not fortuitous: there are floats representing a religious celebration such as the "Crusaders" or "Saint Augustine", or an allusion to Roman antiquity, of which French colonization constitutes, according to the organizers, carnival, continuity. Cette étude se propose de montrer les enjeux d’un type de spectacle de rue à travers la fête du carnaval à Tunis. Elle décrit particulièrement le déroulement du carnaval, les circuits parcourus à travers la ville de Tunis de 1899 à 1914. En se basant essentiellement sur des photos publiées par la revue française La Tunisie illustrée, l’étude montre les différents types de chars et de voitures composant la caravane. Une comparaison avec la fête dite « arabe » cantonnée dans des scènes de courses de cavaliers, démontre que celle-ci est une manifestation de seconde zone. Quel sens donner à l’occupation de l’espace par la fête française ? Le choix des thèmes illustrant le carnaval n’est pas fortuit : on retrouve des chars représentant une célébration religieuse comme les « Croisés » ou « Saint Augustin », ou bien une allusion à l’antiquité romaine dont la colonisation française constitue, selon les organisateurs, du carnaval, la continuité. |
