تتمتع الهند اليوم بأهمية دولية غير المسبوقة منذ استقلالها في عام 1947م، وتأتي هذه الأهمية من كونها أكبر الدول الديمقراطية في العالم اليوم، فقد شهدت الهند الكثير من التطورات عبر تاريخها الطويل، هذه التطورات أعقبت فترة الاستقلال ووقع أغلبها في عهد "جواهر لال نهرو" الذي كان يرمي لجعل الهند واحدة من أبرز الدول الديمقراطية في العالم، وتم وضع الدستور الهندي ويمكن القول أن الحياة السياسية في الهند قد تغيرت بشكل شامل بعد وضع ذلك الدستور، ومنذ ذلك الحين والهند تنعم بنظام فيدرالي ديمقراطي، والديمقراطية الهندية في حالة تطور مستمر، كما مرت الحياة السياسية في الهند بعدة تطورات أبرزت مدى تحلي القيادات السياسية بقدر كبير من المرونة والذكاء، حيث اهتمت القيادة السياسية عبر تاريخ الهند الطويل بعملية الإصلاحات السياسية والاجتماعية والاقتصادية للنهوض بالبلاد، حتي تقف الهند في مصاف الدول المتقدمة، وتستطيع في النهاية الوصول إلى التنمية المنشودة، فبعد تحرر الهند من الاستعمار البريطاني لها، بدأ رجالها في بناء الدولة، وتدعيم ركائز الديمقراطية في محاولة للوصول إلي عملية التنمية بالبلاد.
India today enjoys unprecedented international importance since its independence in 1947. This importance comes from the fact that it is the largest democratic country in the world today. India has witnessed many developments throughout its long history. These developments followed the period of independence and most of them occurred during the era of "Jawaharlal Nehru", who aimed to make India one of the most prominent democratic countries in the world. The Indian Constitution was established and it can be said that political life in India has changed comprehensively after the establishment of that constitution. Since then, India has enjoyed a democratic federal system, and Indian democracy is in a state of continuous development. Political life in India has also undergone several developments that have highlighted the extent to which political leaders have a great deal of flexibility and intelligence. Throughout India's long history, the political leadership has been interested in the process of political, social and economic reforms to advance the country, so that India stands among the ranks of advanced countries and can ultimately achieve the desired development. After India's liberation from British colonialism, its men began building the state and strengthening the pillars of democracy in an attempt to achieve the development process in the country
