520 | |b This research delves into the migration journeys of Cameroonians, tracing their paths from their homeland to Algeria, with a particular focus on Oran. For most migrants interviewed, Algeria—especially Oran—is perceived as a temporary stopover in a broader journey toward Europe. The migration routes they follow are complex and unpredictable, shaped by economic opportunities, legal barriers, and the migration policies of the countries they traverse. Algeria serves as a crucial juncture where migrants adapt to the challenges and opportunities they encounter, though the length of their stay in Oran may extend due to local political and economic conditions. Algeria is primarily viewed as a transit space, but it plays a more significant role in the migrants' journeys than initially anticipated. The local context often necessitates a prolonged stay, which is seen as a necessary delay rather than a change in their ultimate goal of reaching Europe. Unlike other Sub-Saharan migrants who might engage in circular migrations between their home countries and the Maghreb, the Cameroonians in this study exhibit a distinct migratory pattern. They do not typically return to Cameroon after reaching Algeria, underscoring a one-way trajectory. This behavior highlights the unique challenges and aspirations that characterize their migration experience, distinguishing them within the broader context of Sub-Saharan movements toward the Maghreb. Their journeys emphasize the complexity and determination involved in navigating the intricate web of regional dynamics that influence their paths. | ||
