المستخلص: The China’s economic emergence has produced the “China threat theory” which blames China for challenging US hegemony. The aim of this article is to show that: A) this vision stems from erroneous perceptions and the need to make enemies. B) China has not the leverage as it has to handle multifaceted internal issues in the oncoming decades which are likely to mobilize all its resources and the attention of its leaders, the future of the Communist Party being dependent on it. This vision of the Chinese intentions must prevail in order to build a Sino-American cooperation beneficial to all. However, if the United States persist jeopardizing Chinese economic goals, China will embark on a race for global hegemony.

L’émergence économique de la Chine a forgé en Occident le concept de « menace chinoise » qui l’accuse de vouloir remplacer l’hégémonie américaine. L’objectif de cet article est de montrer que : a) ce concept relève de perceptions erronées et du besoin de forger un ennemi ; et que b) la Chine n’en a pas les moyens car elle devra surmonter de nombreux défis internes dans les prochaines décennies qui mobiliseraient toutes ses ressources et l’attention de ses dirigeants, l’avenir du Parti communiste en dépend. Cette vision des intentions chinoises doit l’emporter afin de favoriser une coopération sinoaméricaine bénéfique pour tous. Toutefois, si les Etats-Unis continuent d’entraver les objectifs économiques de la Chine, celle-ci se lancera dans une course pour l’hégémonie mondiale.
