Sydney Lumet’s 1957 film Twelve Angry Men is an example. It was a success in its time, but timeless: it was nominated for an Oscar and won a Golden Bear. In this film, a jury of twelve people (including Henry Fonda in the lead role) meets to decide the fate of a teenager accused of killing his father. He is first judged guilty by eleven votes, only Henry Fonda declares having a «legitimate doubt about the guilt of the accused». As in a scientific research laboratory, the search for the truth begins. A Socratic dialogue is established through a long path of opinions, rebuttals, contradictions, and angry outbursts that almost come to blows. We ask ourselves the question: what principles of scientificity, didactics, and cognitive psychology are used in the film? In a triple parallelism of images, gestures, spoken words, and principles of scientific research, referring to the ideas of Bachelard and Popper on the criteria of scientificity, we present a typology of didactic obstacles, personal conceptions, and cognitive biases at the origin of fallacious reasoning and hasty or naive deductions, appearing in the actors, veiling the reality of things. Henry Fonda managed to shake their initial convictions and reverse the verdict to a unanimous «not guilty». |d La fiction d’investigation ou le film est souvent utilisé comme une métaphore pour expliquer comment la science et la technologie fonctionnent en raison des analogies dans la quête de la vérité. Le film «Douze hommes en colère» de Sydney Lumet en 1957 en est un exemple. Il a connu un succès à son époque, mais est intemporel: il a été nominé pour un Oscar et a remporté un Ours d’or. Dans ce film, un jury de douze personnes (dont Henry Fonda dans le rôle principal) se réunit pour décider du sort d’un adolescent accusé d’avoir tué son père. Il est d’abord jugé coupable par onze voix, seul Henry Fonda déclare avoir un «doute légitime sur la culpabilité de l’accusé». Comme dans un laboratoire de recherche scientifique, la quête de la vérité commence. Un dialogue socratique est établi à travers un long chemin d’opinions, de réfutations, de contradictions et d’explosions de colère qui frôlent presque les coups. Nous nous posons la question: quels principes de scientificité, de didactique et de psychologie cognitive sont utilisés dans le film? Dans un triple parallélisme d’images, de gestes, de paroles prononcées et de principes de recherche scientifique, en référence aux idées de Bachelard et Popper sur les critères de scientificité, nous présentons une typologie des obstacles didactiques, des conceptions personnelles et des biais cognitifs à l’origine de raisonnements fallacieux et de déductions hâtives ou naïves, apparaissant chez les acteurs, voilant la réalité des choses. Henry Fonda parvient à ébranler leurs convictions initiales et à inverser le verdict pour un «non coupable» unanime. | ||
