Many countries around the world, particularly developing nations experiencing economic, social, and political challenges, face a shift of some of their economic activities towards the informal economy. This study aims to highlight the causes and effects of the informal economy in Algeria on the formal economy, as well as methods to combat it. The study adopted a descriptive and analytical approach to achieve the objective and address the posed problem. The study concluded that the informal economy deepens the fragility of the local labor market and results in significant tax revenue losses for the state. It also found that the size of the informal economy in Algeria has progressively increased, reaching high levels, accounting for half of the gross domestic product. This necessitates that the Algerian state takes effective measures to mitigate this phenomenon and integrate it into the formal economy.
