Snapchat has significantly influenced self-advertising and self-expression among individuals, particularly young people. The app's ability to provide greater control over privacy and audience management has contributed to its popularity. This exploratory study examines the impact of Snapchat on a sample of postgraduate students at the University of Sharjah, drawing on the Uses and Gratification Theory (UGT) and conducting in-depth interviews with ten students. The main argument is that Snapchat serves a dual role by reflecting users' real lives and providing a platform for artistic and personal expression while facilitating a blend of public and private interactions. Additionally, while Snapchat's ephemeral nature enhances privacy and comfort, the potential for screenshots poses vulnerabilities. This ephemeral nature also facilitates a new pattern of civic use of Snapchat. Regarding gender differences in self-expression, Snapchat reflects existing societal norms and is a platform for negotiating and contesting new norms. |
