| 520 | |b Dellys, a Carthaginian city, has a rich history dating back to the 2nd century BCE. Initially established as a Phoenician port, it later became a Roman colony called "Rusuccurus," renowned as the oldest maritime city. Today, the city retains numerous remnants from its Roman era, including ancient walls and the Sidi Sosan springs. After the Almoravids' conquest of Al-Andalus, the Hammadids gained control, and Al-Mu'izz ibn Sumadih settled in the region in 1088 CE. Dellys witnessed successive rule by various Arab tribes, each leaving its unique imprint. However, in 1837 CE, the city fell under French occupation until it achieved independence in 1962 CE. Now a popular tourist destination, Dellys attracts both local and foreign visitors who explore its ancient Casbah, surpassing even the Casbah of Algiers in age. Decorated fountains, balconies, minarets, Quranic schools, and lighthouses adorn the city, testaments to its vibrant maritime economy. | ||
