The economic activity in Algeria during the Ottoman period was relatively stable due to the revenues generated from maritime jihad, as well as the contributions made by Andalusian elements to the economic life. However, towards the end of the Ottoman rule, the economic life witnessed a significant deterioration and decline, especially in the second half of the eighteenth century. The reign of Dey Hussein (1818-1830 AD) was considered one of the most difficult periods, as it suffered from a deficit in all aspects, especially since this period coincided with the naval blockade imposed by the French forces on the Algerian coasts since 1827 AD until the fall of Algeria under French occupation. We cannot ignore the internal conditions that worsened the situation, such as the burden of taxes and various levies imposed on economic activities, which led to disobedience and rebellion, ultimately resulting in the weakness and fall of the Algerian beylik, and the end of Ottoman rule in Algeria after more than three centuries of presence. |
