Inequalities in education have always been a central issue in Algeria's national development programs. Since independence in 1962, a significant progress has been made in this sector, but disparities still persist, particularly between different regions of the country. Indeed, the government has invested significant effort in programs designed to raise school enrolment rates in rural and marginalized areas, by reforming school programs to meet students' needs as effectively as possible. In collaboration with various international institutions, the aim is to promote equitable education of the same quality for all, through innovative plans. In this context, this analysis aims to explore two key dimensions of education: the enrolment of children of legal age and educational inequalities within the population aged 15 years and over, using data from the Ministry of National Education and the results of the 1998 and 2008 Censuses to assess the persistence of these inequalities. This analysis reveals the significant differences in both access to education and the quality of education among the different regions of Algeria. These disparities are reflected not only in different enrolment rates, but also in distribution disparities of attainment level and school duration (Average years of schooling). In the light of these observations, it is essential for public authorities to put in place specific education policies that meet the needs of the most disadvantaged regions. |
