| 520 | |b Monetary unity represents the highest form of monetary integration between two or more countries, prompting inquiries into the theoretical basis of such integration. The theory of Optimal Currency Area emerged in the early 1960s through studies comparing fixed and flexible exchange rates, aiming to identify the necessary and sufficient conditions for forming such a region. The theory evolved by adding criteria in the '70s and '80s and took a new direction in the late '90s. After the establishment of the Eurozone as an applied case of the theory, a new approach called self-evolutionary criteria emerged, signifying that the monetary union determines its optimality standards. This paper reviews the experience of the European Monetary Union as one of the most significant experiments in optimal currency areas in world history. | ||
