Throughout antiquity and beyond, the stories of the gods and the adventures of heroes have excited the imagination and nourished the memory of philosophers, poets and artists, this is how mythology and ancient legends become sources of inspiration, accompany history and interpret it in a different way. These stories came to life in artistic works and in particular mosaics that refer to a specific moment of a historical or mythical episode. A mosaic in Cherchell depicting an episode of Ulysses' journey; Ulysses and the Sirens, decorated the basin of a fountain found in a Roman villa and returns to a known Homeric scene. The story of Ulysses is that of a man who goes from war to peace, from hatred to love, from chaos to harmony, from exile to returning home; he goes from a bad life to a good life. It is therefore not only a magnificent epic, but it is the matrix of a thought rich in symbolism which answers the question of the meaning of life.

Ces histoires prenaient vie dans les oeuvres artistiques et notamment les mosaïques qui renvoient à un moment précis d’un épisode historique ou mythique. Une mosaïque à Cherchell figurant un épisode du voyage d’Ulysse ; Ulysse et les sirènes, décorait le bassin d’une fontaine trouvée dans une villa romaine et revient sur une scène homérique connue. L’histoire d’Ulysse est celle d’un homme qui va de la guerre à la paix, de la haine à l’amour, du chaos à l’harmonie, de l’exil au retour chez soi ; il va de la vie mauvaise à la vie bonne. Ce n’est donc pas seulement une épopée magnifique, mais c’est la matrice d’une pensée riche en symbolique qui répond à la question du sens de la vie.
