520 |b The importance of the study: \ The present study gives a detailed analysis of the trends in the educational levels during the period 1986-2009. The development in the number of pupils enrolled, school, classes, teachers, class density and number of students per a teacher is also investigated in this study. \ The following facts were detected: \ 1- The illiteracy rate dropped from 49.9% to ;/29.7 during the period 1986-2006 and despite this decline, rate of illiteracy is still high especially among females and in the rural areas. \ 2- Lower illiteracy rates were prevailed among younger age groups due to the great attention paid to education in recent years. Moreover, it can be noticed that the rate of decline in illiteracy overtime at younger ages is faster than that among higher age groups \ 3- There are significant improvements in the proportions of the population getting intermediate education during 1986-2006, but these proportions are still lower for females compared to males especially in rural areas. With respect to population who had university degree and above, their proportion in urban areas was about three times the proportion in the rural areas (15.5%-against 4.7%). \ 4- The younger age groups are characterized by higher educational rates compared to older age groups. \ 5- The lowest level of illiteracy for both males and females were found in urban governorates while Upper Egypt governorates have the highest level of illiteracy (except Giza and Aswan governorates). \ 6- Urban governorates have the highest percentage of population with intermediate and higher certificates especially in Cairo and because most universities and colleges are concentrated in it, while the lowest percentage was in Upper Egypt. \ 7- The number of pupils enrolled in different stages was largely increased during the period 1986-2009 for both males and females with lead to great improvement in the enrollment rate in all stages especially basic education. \ 8- High percentages of females enrolled in various stages of education for the total enrollment and enrollment. \ 9- The government gives great attention for construction of new school, in addition to establish new classes in the working schools. \ In spite of number of classes were increased, the class density didn't improved during the period of study due to the great increases in the number of pupils. \ 10- The number of teachers increased at higher percentage as compared to the number of pupils enrolled in all stage, which lead to improve the ratio of the number of students per teacher. \ 11- High number students enrolled at Egyptian Universities, according to a set of different sciences and low for the group of Agricultural sciences. \ Recommendations: \ 1- To reduce the illiteracy rates, classes of eliminating illiteracy tor adults should be supported and promoted by the government to give opportunity to the people who missed the primary education. \ 2- Increase awareness among parents of the importance of education to increase enrollment in basic education and reducing dropout rates. \ 3- The technical education should be encouraged and more efforts must be devoted by the government in this field to increase the people acceptance of technicians' education particularly after realizing the great need of technicians for implementing the development plans. \ 4- More school should be constructed to increase the classes in different stages of education and consequently the average number of pupils/class will decrease. \ 5- State's interest in university education and put it on top of priorities for the preparation of graduates unable to compete in the labor market. \ 6- Encourage females to enroll in higher education through creating new branches of the collages and higher institutes in all the governorates in Upper Egypt.
