Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Mohammad the most honorable Messenger, his Family and Companions: A Fatwa [legal edict] in Islam plays a significant role and affects the lives of people since the mufti is assigned from the Lord of the worlds and represents the Prophet peace and blessings be upon Him. One of the objectives of Islamic law is motivating Muslims to hold to moderation in all their affairs with no excessiveness. Any deviation away from this moderate course is regarded as departing from the objective of the legislator. Motivation to this moderated doctrine was employed by the Prophet [pbuh], the companions [may Allah be pleased with them] and the luminary scholars who came after. A qualified Mufti is the one who encourages people towards moderation and keeps them away from extremism, since he knows that Islam is the religion of ease and forgiveness- that the Islamic rules are flexible and suitable for different times and places. He knows that differences breeds respect since it is actually a matter of diversity and pluralism and not contradiction. This difference in opinion is the natural outcome of ijtihad [personal reasoning] which was developed by Islamic law. A valid fatwa is a direct reason for removing ignorance, unifying the community, connecting it to the scholars and supporting the people in performing their legal duties in the perfect manner.
