This paper comprises an introduction and three chapters. The introduction includes an exposition of the permissibility of wiping over socks and the wisdom behind this permissibility. -The first chapter addresses the conditions for wiping over the khuff socks in general terms. -The second chapter addresses three different scholarly opinions on wiping over socks (jawrab). -The third chapter addresses the evidences and arguments for each opinion, \ and evaluates them This paper poses two sets of questions. The first interrogates what is considered to be socks, the ruling for wiping over them and whether they follow the same rulings as khuffs. The second set asks whether the socks (Ar. sharab) used in our times are the same as those intended by former scholars, thus taking on the same rulings, i.e. permissibility or prohibition. The paper contends that the strongest opinion is that of the permissibility of wiping over socks of all kinds if they satisfy the conditions of khuffs mentioned in the first chapter. Although these conditions are not met by the socks used in our times, it is nevertheless permissible to wipe over them when there is a necessity such as the case of someone who has no other alternative. Such a person is not blameworthy, if he or she does so, intending to follow the opinion of scholars who permit it.
