|b This research comprises an introduction, a preface, two chapters and a conclusion. \ The introduction discusses the reasons for selecting this research topic, its importance, the research plan and methodology followed. \ The preface deals with two topics: \ 1. Basing Islamic law on public interest and taking it into account when applying Islamic law; \ 1. The authority of the companions) opinions and actions. \ Abu Bakr>s actions based on common interest are later presented while his exercise of ijtihad, based on the dictates of public interest, is presented in another chapter, demonstrating that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) accepted the actions and ijtihad of the two caliphs, Abu Bakr and Umar. This is therefore tantamount to a consensus on the validity of deriving rulings based on common interest through ijtihad and is among the strongest evidences pointing to its validity. It furthermore constitutes a methodology for those who followed Abu Bakr. \ The conclusion comprises results and recommendations. The research employs scientific methodology in presenting, documenting and phrasing, all the while relying on authentic sources, in an attempt to achieve the desired goal, benefit the reader and contribute-even in small measure-to the Islamic library. \ First and foremost, praise be to Allah.
