520 |b Ash- Shatra is one of the most important cities in Al-Muntafiq .It comes next to An Nassiryah in position and may be more important with respect to the power of tribes there. It was founded by Sheikh Hasan Al Sanjari in 1787 on the bank of Al-Khaleeliah small river. It comes from Al-Qaraf on the western side near Emam al-Abbas bin A|-Kadhim where many visitors come there. With the passage of time, the place mentioned turned to a town of trading importance regardless of its small size. However, Ash-Shatra trading position got declined because of dryness of the river that watered it. Consequently, the Ottomans changed the town into another site located on Al-Qaraf river which made it flourished and it regained its importance in 1873 by attracting many traders from Basra and Baghdad . In 1881 Ash- Shatra became vice-Governorate. The tribes inhabited the mentioned town started standing against the British forces in Iraq during the early years of the Second World War. Actually, these tribes did fight the British and could bother them in two battles-. Bahiza and Batnija. When the 1920th revolution took place, Ash-Shatra was on of the battle-fields where the tribes prepared themselves to face the British but the circumstances were more powerful than the abilities of the Mujahids there. As a result, the revolutionary fuel stopped in various aspects of the Great Iraqi Revelation(1920th revolution) including Ash- Shatra. This happened because of the lack of equivalence between the Mujahids and the British. Among the reasons behind this decline was the disability of the rebels of Ash-Shatra to reach the battle-field but they did their best to participate with the other Mujahids all over Iraq in leaving the British usurpers with no choice but to grant the Iraqis their independence in 1921.
