Number of developments in early 2007 raised many questions about Russia's foreign policies in general and the Middle East in particular, and the limits of The Russian regional and international role. These led some to believe a new era of Russian foreign policies has started, and that Russia intends to play a resisting, or at least a parallel, regional and international role vis-a-vis the USA. In spite of its acute criticism of the US, Russia's clear diplomatic activity and its contradictory stances against American policies on many issues, does not mean a basic change in Moscow policies concerning confronting the US administration, in the Middle East. On the Palestinian issue, the Russian position, unlike that of the US, is stable, keeping good relations and opens channels with all Palestinian movements, including Hamas. Moscow praised the Mecca Accord as a door for the resumption of the Middle East peace process. President’s Vladimir Putin's visit to the region, contrary to many analyses, is a sign of a new approach in Russia’s foreign policies, or attempt to break through the US influence.
