The Arab World is witnessing highly resolute political uprisings and activity. Therefore, it has become a necessity to investigate the truth of such public changes in the region, their motivating dynamics and whether they would actually lead to democracy. To this end, MESJ Editor-in-chief Jawad Al-Hamad made an interview with former Jordanian Prime Minister Ahmed Obeidat to look into the scenarios of this shift. The discussion focused on 3 main topics: 1. Political Change in the Arab World 2. Palestinian Issue and Arab-Israeli Conflict 3. Jordan's Interiour Situation and Regional Role. Firstly, Obeidat argued that this sociopolitical wave will cover the entire Arab World but with different dimensions and demands, depending on each state’s size, ruling system and amount of public suffering. Such uprisings are ongoing due to mindful political movements from different backgrounds, he added. Secondly, the current changes in the Arab World, according to Obeidat, raise optimism for the future of the Palestinian issue if they continue in the right way. The Arab countries surrounding Israel are expected to recover and become a suitable point of departure to provide support for the Palestinian people in its effort towards liberation. However, this should go side by side with internal Palestinian activity. Thirdly, the slogan raised in Jordan is to ‘reform the system’ in a comprehensive manner which encompasses the constitution as well as the style of administration. This contrasts with the Egyptians’ demand to ‘change the system’ by dropping all its figures, institutions and indications. On the other hand, the kingdom’s regional role will depend on its ability to carry out the reform sought at all interiour levels, unify the society with all political and non-political divisions, contain fledgling youth powers in Jordan as their own home, and keep up with higher Arab interests. |
