البحث عبارة عن تساؤل في الفكر الديني في العراق القديم وهو هل من الممكن ان يخلو تاريخ العراق القديم من مظاهر لديانة توحيدية خالصه، يعبد فيها اله واحد ولا يعترف بما دونه من اشكال المعبودات الاخرى، من المعروف ان التاريخ العراقي القديم لم تتضح معالم نصوصه المسمارية بصورة كلية، وان الكثير من هذه النصوص المسمارية الدينية (ذات الطابع الشرقي) قد ترجمت بأقلام الغرب وربما بعيدة عن مفهوم التوحيد الحقيقي، لذا جاءت هذه الترجمات بلغة جامدة وحرفية بحتة. نجد في شخصية نبوخذ نصر وهو من ملوك الكلدانيين اخر سلالة حكمت في العراق القديم، ملامح من الوحدانية في العبادة وهذا قد يبدو جليا من خلال استنطاق النص المسماري الديني وقراءته بنفس شرقي فضلا عن النص التوراتي (بعد نقده) والنص القرآني الذي يشير الى الجانب التوحيدي في عبودية نبوخذ نصر. فيما يخص النص المسماري فان هناك نقش على اسطوانة حجرية دونت عليها اعمال الملك نبوخذ نصر بلسان حال الملك نفسه وجاء في العديد من الاسطر اشارة الى نوعية العبادة السائدة انذاك. وهذه الكتابات قد دونت بأقلام الكهنة لذا ترى فيها الخلط الكثير في نوع العبادة. اما النص التوراتي فنجد في سفر ارميا وسفر دانيال اشارات واضحة تذكر بان نبوخذ نصر قد مجد الله العلي القدير وسبحه واعترف له بالشكر الجزيل كونه صاحب النعمة عليه في اقامة مملكة. وان نبوخذ نصر يذكر في هذه الاسفار بانه عبداً لله سبحانه وتعالى كما ان كاتب السفر هو النبي دانيال عليه السلام كان من اكثر الاشخاص الذين قربهم نبوخذ نصر وجعله رئيس للمستشارين البابلين في عهده . ومع ذلك فان في بعض اسطر النص التوراتي مغالطات تاريخية ناقشناها بمزاج تاريخي من خلال البحث. النص القرآني الذي يشير الى ان نبوخذ نصر كان يعبد الله الواحد الاحد نجد الاشارة الية في سورة الاسراء التي تكلمت عن الفساد الذي يعمله بنو اسرائيل وكيف ان الله القدير يسلط عليهم اقواما يذلونهم ويسبونهم، وهؤلاء الاقوام باتفاق اغلب المفسرين هم البابليون الكلدان بقيادة نبوخذنصر بما يعرف بالسبي البابلي الثاني 586 ق.م .على ان في البحث مناقشات حول معنى العبودية ومدى تطابقها مع فكرة البحث. ومع ذلك فان البحث محاولة لا تفرض نفسها في واقع التأكيد. \
