المستخلص: تعد القلاع من العمارات المهمة والمنتشرة في الوطن العربي الغاية من إنشائها هي حماية المدينة والطرق الخارجية من اللصوص وقطاع الطرق وقد بنيت هذه القلاع ذات طابع عسكري المتصفة بالأسوار العالية المدعمة بالأبراج والبوابات الضخمة ذات الأواوين والتي تحتوي بابا ضخما على شكل مزور(منعطف)يصعب الدخول إليه وكل هذه الصفات الدفاعية مستوحات في اغلبها من تحصينات الاخيضر المرجح تاريخه إلى القرن الثاني الهجري. وفي العراق انتشرت هذه القلاع في الشمال والوسط والجنوب لا تزال بعض منها باقية لحد الآن والآخر قد هدم بسبب الإعمار الحديث أو الإهمال من قبل الناس لهذه القلاع. وقلعة الخزاعل هي واحدة من هذه القلاع التي انشأت في منطقة الفرات الأوسط والتي تعد من القلاع المهمة الباقية رغم الإهمال وتهدم بعض جدرانها وعبث الناس بالوحدات البنائية ولم يعرف تاريخ بناء هذه القلعة لعدم وجود كتابة تدل على ذلك. وهذه الدراسة هي دراسة ميدانية تشمل أبعاد وقياسات هذه القلعة ومن ثم دراسة الخصائص المعمارية التي تتفرد بها، وتاريخها يكتنفه الغموض ومن خلال بعض العناصر المعمارية والزخرفية لهذه القلعة وبعض الإشارات في المصادر رجحنا أنها قد تعود إلى فترة أقدم من الحقبة العثمانية. وهذا الشك في تاريخ بناء القلعة جاء لكونها لم تدرس ميدانيا من قبل المختصين من قبل.

Castle are considered of the important Islamic architectures spread all over Arab countries. The aim behind construching them is to save the town and the high ways from the thieves and brigands. Such castle show military system, their high walls are supported by towers and large gates with arcudes which contain a great curved gate impossible to enter it. All there defending features were inspired by Al-Akheidhir fortifications dated back to the second century (A.H.) In Iraq, such castles spread out in the north, middle and south, some of which are still upright whereas others were destroyed because of the modem reconstruction or neglect by the people living nearby. Al-Khiza'il castle is one of the buildings which was built in the middle Euphrates i the important existed one during the time even though the neglect and falling down of some of their walls as well as abuse by people on the building units but still upright. No certain time of the construction of this castle, since there was no scripts referring to it. The present study is a survey including the dimensions and measures of the parts of the castle then the study of the archaeological characteristics the castle uniquely has. The date of it is a point of argument among the specialists that is unknown up till now. However, by collecting some ornamental and archaeological elements of the castle in addition to some different references, the age of its construction as right as possible is given. Such study is the first archaeological one done by the specialists
