The term information and knowledge society is viewed and interpreted in different ways. The most accepted way is the reliance on technological advances for hegemony on the developing countries., Diffusion of consumer culture and dismantling their values and habits in favor of alien culture is the main targets. This study traces briefly the begining of the information society especially the role of information and information technology in the emergence of the information sector as the leading sector of all agricultural, industrial and service sectors. Size of the information sector in advanced countries (like U.S. & Sweden) reaches more than 50% of all economically active population. Knowledge replaced capital as the main productive factor. Emphasis today on indicators of the information society commissioned by ESCWA starting with enabling environment through assessment of the process of capacity building and strengthening ICT sector. The study ends with emphasis on the enormous growth of economic and military capabilities of advances countries and the marginal benefit of developing countries from the so-called global economic society. The study delineates on sum global traps for developing countries e.g. continued incrase in the external debit and its benefits, national mass communication is not expected to flourish in front of the enormous monopoly of global media. |
