520 | |b This paper applies the thory of “polarization” to understand the various phases of the Arab world’s interaction with the West, and to suggest elements that can form the basis for a new discourse between Western and Arab culture. For a period of time, the Arab world evelved independenty of Western values. During this time period, the Arabs benefitec from two factors - power and legitimacy - that attracted other peoples toward Arab cultural values, or the Arab “pole”. Arab civilization gradually deteriorated in power and legitimacy, at the same time that Western civilization flourished. These developments led the Arab world to gravitate towards the Western pole. Arab “weakness” in international affairs allowed the West, under the influence of some of its intellectuals, to denigrate Arabs as being less than human. In fact, Western imperialism became associated with a racist world-view. This viewpoint is clearly seen in the Western films industry, which consistently portrays Arabs as bloodthirsty, oversexed, professional terrorists. At this juncture, it is urgent to engage the West in a new type of discourse that moves beyond the concept of the clash of civilizations and the perception that capitalism is the only solution to human problems. This paper proposes a dialogue between Western and Arab cultures that goes farther than recognizing cultural diversity by emphasizing the elements of similarity. Such elements include democracy in its various applications, as well as social problems such as hunger, homelessness and chronic diseases. The paper explains that the establishment of this new form of East-West discourse requires an investigation of the various factors that affect the flow of cross-cultural communication. | ||
