تمثل كتب اللغة مصدراً مهماً من مصادر التاريخ العربي قبل الإسلام، فهي لا تخلو من وصف مكان أو إيراد شاهد، فتزيد من التوضيح وتزيل اللبس في المصطلحات الواردة في كتب التاريخ، لذا فإن الرجوع إليها يعد ضرورة منهجـية، من شأنها أن تضيء إضاءات ساطعة جوانب عديدة من تاريخنا العربي. ويعد ابن دريد ممن لهم باع طويل في علوم اللغة عند العرب، ولا يملك الباحث هنا إلا أن يشير إلى عراقته العلمية؛ فهو مصنف كتاب الاشتقاق، وفيه قدم أنموذجاً علمياً في اللغة والتاريخ والنسب. أما منهجي في البحث، فألخصه على النحو الآتي: قسمت متن البحث إلى قسمين: القسم الأول: (ابن دريد وكتابه الاشتقاق)، استعرضتُ فيه حياة ابن دريد ونشأته باختصار، وثناء العلماء على جهوده، وعن منهجه في هذا الكتاب، متجاوزاً تآليفه، ومركّزاً فقط على المعارف الدينية، والقسم الثاني: (دراسة الألفاظ الدينية عند العرب قبل الإسلام في ضوء كتاب الاشتقاق) وقفت فيه على الألفاظ الدينية في كتاب الاشتقاق، وعددها خمس وأربعون لفظة، وألحقت بالبحث جدولاً لتلك الألفاظ، وأثبت في هوامش الصفحات أسماء المراجع ومؤلفيها مع أرقام الأجزاء إن كان للمرجع أجزاء، وأرقام الصفحات، إلا كتاب الاشتقاق، واستكملت التوثيق في قائمة المصادر والمراجع.
Language books are an important source of pre-Islamic Arab history; they are not only free to describe a place or to provide witness, but they also increase clarity and remove ambiguity in the terms contained in the history books, so the reference is a need for a methodological necessity. They lighten many aspects of Arab history. Ibn-Duraid was considered one of the people who has a great knowledge in science in the Arab language. The researcher has only refered to the scientific rootage where the author clssified this derivation book, which presented a scientific model of language, history and descent. As for my research method, it is as follows: The researcher has divided it into two sections: Section I: (Ibn-Dureid and his derivation book), in which he reviewed the life of Ibn Duraid and his inception in short, and the praise of scientists for his efforts, and his mothed of this book, surpassing the other books, and focusing only on religious knowledge, Section II: (a study of religious Arabs pre-islam words in the light of the book derivation) and focused on the words in the book of religious derivation, which are forty-five words, attached in a table, that indexed in the margins of the references pages and the list of their authors with the numbers of parts if the refrence had sections, and page -numbers, except that of derivation book, which completed the documentation in a list of the sources and references.
