Hardy's third novel, A Pair of Blue Eyes (1873), has often been critically derided for the lapse in the choice of narrative structure. Indeed, instead of recognizing the text as having literary merit in itself numerous critics have only assigned it value as either an example of what they saw as the weaknesses of Hardy's early writing, or as a precursor to his later and more celebrated novels, specifically Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891) and Jude the Obscure (1895). In both his fiction and his poetry. Hardy seems keen on juxtaposing mismatched elements in remarkably artful ways. In the case of A Pair of Blue Eyes, however, observations that the novel is fraught with mismatching have usually been made in derogatory ways. Other critics have been particularly lively in describing the supposed defects of its mismatched elements. Hence, there are opinions that A Pair of Blue Eyes is weakened by its disparities. But a persistent pattern in Hardy's narrative —and evidences in his correspondence and in his revisions- all point to a different conclusion. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate that many of those incongruous features are neither incidental nor unplanned. Rather, distributed as they are over many different levels of the narrative, they constitute a pattern that was well calculated to play a major thematic role in the novel.
