يتناول البحث وضع الصناعة المصرية في الفترة من سنة 1914 إلى سنة 1952، حيث شهدت السنة الأولى قيام الحرب العالمية الأولى والسنة الثانية شهدت تحولاً في السياسة المصرية بقيام ثورة 23 يوليو 1952، وكان هذان الحدثان لهما تأثيراً واضحاً على الصناعة المصرية. ومع تطور النشاط الصناعي وصعود صناعات وهبوط أخرى، إلا أن تلك الصناعات كانت في المجمل صناعات استهلاكية، عدا صناعات الغزل والنسيج، ولم تكن الصناعات تنشأ بشكل منظم حيث أن السياسة الصناعية لم تشهد أية تخطيط. وتناول هذا البحث أثر الحروب والأزمات الاقتصادية عليها، مع توضيح الدور الذي قامت به الدولة للحفاظ على الصناعة ومواجهة الصعوبات التي كانت تقف حجر عثرة في طريقها، وكذلك الدور الذي لعبه الرأسماليون المصريون في الاقتصاد وتأثيره على الصناعة مع توضيح تطور القوة العاملة الصناعية ومدى هذا التطور. أما عن المصادر التي تم الاعتماد عليها فقد قسمتها كالآتي: وثائق أرشيفات الخارجية المصرية وعابدين ومصلحة الشركات، كما تم الاعتماد على مضابط مجلس النواب، وعلى تقارير وزارتي الصناعة والتجارة والمالية، وعلى النشرات الاقتصادية لبنكي مصر والأهلي المصري، والمعهد القومي للتخطيط، ووثائق الأمم المتحدة. بالإضافة إلى الرسائل العلمية والأبحاث والمراجع العربية والأجنبية وعدد من الدوريات وبعض المواقع الإلكترونية.
