The report represents the product of a symposium held by the Middle East Studies Center on the future of the Palestinian Authority. The Palestinian cause has been witnessing several political, security and social issues where the PA’s role has changed in terms of serving the higher interests of the Palestinian people. The Oslo-Agreement-based PA has failed to approach a state as stipulated in the accord with Israel. Furthermore, the negotiations and continuous political efforts since Oslo and the 2004 Roadmap have not consolidated the PA’s position to establish an independent Palestinian state, especially from the Israeli side. The economic relations regulated by the 1994 Paris Protocol has made the Palestinian economy dependent on that of Israel, which adopts several punitive measures to exert political pressure on the PA. The following are scenarios for the future of the PA: 1. Continuation of the internal Palestinian dispute rather than any reconciliation 2. Acceptance of duality in governance, along with reconciliation, partnership, cooperation and dialogue with Hamas in order to come up with settlements 3. Abolition of the PA and going back to the pre-Oslo stage 4. Victory and control of either side on the entire political leadership 5. Hopefully, radical changes in the composition, form, institutions and leaders of the PA, or at least in its role in Palestine.
