The party ruling Algeria for 50 years by majority in the National People's Assembly has been a great disappointment to the people, who have been looking forward to gradual reform of the regime. An international campaign was launched to support the integrity of the legislative elections held in May 2012, as monitors regarded the process as a significant step towards reform and democracy. However, national parties contested the results and said the country had missed a historic chance for democratic change. The elections proved that the actual authority is unable to carry out reform from within the regime. It was also obvious that the official political parties were neither serious nor credible among the public. The question raised now remains: what is the future of Algeria within the current political freeze as well as the deliberate exclusion of the people aspiring for change, while the only way is gradual reform?
