The Middle East Studies Center held the 4th Political Salon titled "Future of Reform in Jordan". The event was chaired by Gen. Mahmoud Irdisat, the head of the Strategic Studies Center in King Abdullah II Academy for Defensive Studies. It was joined by a host of Jordanian Academics, politicians and experts. The participants discussed the following determinants for the success of the course of reform: 1. having a real political will to take a great step in political reform 2. starting economic reform in the favour of the ordinary citizen 3. initiating genuine political, diplomatic approaches aiming to reposition the country in its merited regional status in the face of the Israeli project 4. revising the constitution in a way that accomplishes unanimous, settled political reform. Three future scenarios were presented during the meeting: 1. agreement on common issues for reform 2. regime's contentment with its recent constitutional and legal reform 3. attempt of regime or some hard-line forces in it to make a public, political conflict with the opposition. It was concluded that the future of reform in the kingdom is not limited to the two options of keeping the status quo or going to chaos. The recommendation was to form a popular national unity government, putting forward a new election law which enjoys public consensus and guarantees a safe process.
