: اهتمت الدراسة الحالية ببحث القيمة الاجتماعية للمهور في المجتمع الكويتي من حيث واقع تلك المهور، الأهمية الاجتماعية للمهر المرتفع، العوامل الداعمة لقيمة المهر المرتفع، الآثار الاجتماعية المترتبة على تلك القيمة. أجريت الدراسة على عينة كبيرة نسبياً من المواطنين الكويتيين (ن=700 مفردة)، تتوزع توزعاً متقارباً بين الجنسين، واعتمدت الدراسة على مقياس صمم بما يتفق مع موضوع الدراسة وهدفها، كما تم التأكد من صدق هذا المقياس وثباته. تتلخص أهم نتائج الدراسة فيما يخص واقع المهور في المجتمع الكويتي، في أن استجابات غالبية المفحوصين جاءت مؤكدة القيمة الاجتماعية العالية للمهر المرتفع: كما كشفت الدراسة عن فروق بين الجنسين في إدراك واقع المهور في المجتمع الكويتي، حيث جاءت استجابات الذكور أكثر تعبيراً عن صعوبة هذا الواقع مقارنة بالإناث. وفيما يخص التقدير الاجتماعي للمهر المرتفع، تبين من الدراسة أن استجابات غالبية المفحوصين تميل إلى تأكيد هذا التقدير لدرجة أن المهر يتوقف عليه إتمام الزواج أو إلغاؤه. كما كشفت الدراسة أن المهر يرتفع كلما كانت الفتاة تعمل. وأصغر سناً وأعلى تعليماً، وهناك عوامل أخرى ثقافية اجتماعية تدعم ارتفاع المهور في المجتمع الكويتي مثل المقارنة بين العائلات، ضعف المعرفة بين الطرفين. وقد تبين من الدراسة وعي المفحوصين بالآثار السلبية لارتفاع المهور، منها الزواج من أجنبيات، عزوف الشباب عن الزواج، رفع سن الزواج، ازدياد العنوسة، التوتر بين العروسين وكذلك بين أسرتيهما، بالإضافة إلى كثرة الزواج السري والعرفي، ولا توجد فروق بين الجنسيين في إدراك الآثار السلبية لارتفاع المهور. بوجه عام هناك إدراك للآثار السلبية المترتبة على ارتفاع المهور وهناك رؤية انتقاديه لواقع المهور باعتبارها أعباء أو عوامل ضاغطة على العلاقات الاجتماعية، وعلى الرغم من ذلك ما زالت هناك معتقدات وأفكار تضفي تقديراً اجتماعياً عالياً للمهر المرتفع؛ الأمر الذي يترك انعكاسات سلبية على الأسرة والزواج في المجتمع الكويتي.
The study aims to carry out research on the social value of Mahr in Kuwaiti society, showing the reality of the Mahr system, supportive mechanisms for the high amount of Mahr values, besides the social effects of its high value. The study was conducted on a sample of 700 Kuwaiti citizens of both sexes. It depends on a scale especially designed to match the study’s goals and objectives, and validity and reliability measures have been applied. The study concludes that there is a high social value to the high amount of Mahr. The study states that there is a significant difference between the genders awareness of the reality of the high value of Mahr in Kuwaiti society, while males respond more expressively about the difficulties of Mahr than females. In addition, the study states that 75% of the sample tends to emphasize the prestige of high Mahr to a degree that might dissolve marriages, if they do not agree about Mahr. Social values highlight the high cost of Mahr and it is positive social effects. The study explains that younger, more highly-educated, working women will have higher Mahr in society. There are some other cultural factors that support the high value of Mahr, such as showing off between families, and no pre-marital relationships between brides and grooms. The study shows that the sample members are aware of the negative effects of the high value of Mahr. For instance it will increase cross-nationality marriages (hetero- gamous), the prevalence of bachelorhood among men, the late age of marriage for both sexes, and tension between newly-weds and their families. In addition, there has been an increase in the number of secret marriages and unofficial marriages. There is no difference in awareness of the negative effects for the high Mahr value between the two sexes. In general, there is an awareness of the negative effects for the high Mahr value, and, furthermore, there is a critical perspective for high Mahr value in Kuwaiti society because it is considered to be a burden or a pressure mechanism on social relations. In spite of all of that, there are beliefs and traditions which consider the high value of Mahr to be prestigious to the family and the bride, which have further negative reflections on family and marriage in Kuwaiti society \
