يعد الجامع جزءاً مهماً من مورفولوجية المحلة الموصلية القديمة، وإن موقعه الذي يتوسطها نسبياً يجعله محوراً للتفاعل الاجتماعي، بوصفه مركزاً للقيم الروحية والنفسية. أما المحلة فإنها بدورها تقوم بوظائف عديدة متنوعة ومختلفة تجاه المسجد من خلال نشاطات جماعاتها، الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والتربوية والخدمية.وارتأى الباحث القيام بهذا البحث للوقوف على نمط العلاقة الوظيفية بين الجامع والمحلة الموصلية القديمة. وأعتمد على منطلقات النظرية البنائية الوظيفية كمدخل نظري للبحث. أما المنهج فهو منهج دراسة الحالة، فضلاً عن الاتجاه السوسيوأنثروبولوجي. وكانت أدوات البحث لجمع المعلومات، المقابلة والملاحظة البسيطة، فضلاً عن الملاحظة بالمشاركة بوصف الباحث جزءاً من مجتمع البحث.وقد توصل البحث إلى مجموعة من النتائج أهمها، أن الجامع يمثل مؤسسة اجتماعية متعددة الوظائف وله دور كبير في الحياة الاجتماعية للمحلة الموصلية القديمة. وهذا خلق بينهما نوعاً من العلاقة التي تتميز بالتساند والتبادلية من حيث التأثر والتأثير.
