In light of the developments in the Arab World, there are controversies between the different political elites over assessing the performance and outcomes of the democratic process, uncovering some misunderstanding of the concept itself and its globally recognized principles. Many of the great achievements which are widely believed to consolidate the implementation of democracy are seen by some parties as a threat to the entire political life as well as the theft of the peoples’ sacrifices. The Arab Spring states have made significant accomplishments with regard to democracy. In case of any mistakes in the practice, it is most probably attributed to the lack of foundation and structures. It is actually the turnout in important decisions and convergence or divergence of votes between rival candidates or parties which constitute the main contentious points. In order to prove their points, various parties often appear in the media to contrast their experiences with those in the West, especially when the defeated desire to criticize the winner. Most of those contrasts are employed in a subjective, incomprehensive way and within heated propaganda. The principles of democracy in its major world examples have expanded and deepened with practice. They have even left extreme typicality to be more realistic and prioritize the state interests and peculiarities. Such countries vary in their systems of ruling, election, political parties, legislative councils and relation between the three powers in a way that achieves its own higher interest. In fact, some laws in some democratic countries may be considered obstacles to democracy in others, such as the election threshold. The present report does not view low turnout or the close votes between candidates or parties as a defect for winners, unless there is some legislation which opposes it. In fact, it is rated a progress towards democracy. This is proved in an overall study on a number of major democracies in the West – such as the US, UK, Finland, France and Brazil – in the East – such as South Korea and Japan – and those surrounding the Arab World – such as Israel and Turkey. In conclusion, practice will guarantee a more stable political life under democracy for the Arab Spring states, holding the new governments responsible for creating and maintaining the necessary atmosphere for such transition.
