The 11th Iranian presidential elections on June 15, 2013 brought Reformist candidate Hassan Rouhani, defeating five conservatives supported by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Such a result has a number of indications, most important of which are the society’s approach towards the foreign world and strong desire to leave behind the previous stage with its hard economic conditions which affect people’s daily lives. They are unhappy with some of former President Mahmoud Ahmadi nejad’s policies, especially those connected with foreign policy and ties with regional and Western countries. The Iranians’ wish to open to the West was confirmed during a session for the UN General Assembly on September 24, 2013. There was also the phone call between Obama and Rouhani. The present report explores the development of Iranian relations with the Europeans and – more importantly – the US as well as their possible impacts on the nuclear file, some regional issues and the Arabian Gulf states.
